Dhansara lives in a poor, marginalized community with her aunt and uncle. They live in a remote village in mid-western Nepal where there is very little cultivable land to support their livelihood. Dhansara is in 9th grade and attends a community school thanks to the support of CRM. She has obtained a B in Math, a B in science and a B+ in English. She is an average student in her class and is disciplined in her studies. Dhansara helps her aunt with the household chores. “Thank you for giving me an opportunity to go to school. I hope to one day complete all my studies and become financially independent,” said Dhansara. Your continued love and support will help Dhansara to receive the assistance she needs to develop her potential.
Dhansara lives with her maternal uncle’s family. Her father used to abuse her mother every day. Later on her mother left her father and married another man from the village. For the past five years Dhansara has been staying with her uncle. Her uncle is very poor and it is difficult for him to continue sending Dhansara to the community school.
The trafficking of young girls to India for the purpose of prostitution is probably the busiest ‘slave trade’ of its kind anywhere in the world. Trafficking has become a highly profitable business and is often protected by high-profile politicians. Lack of education and extreme poverty only make this problem worse, leading parents to sell their daughters, and husbands to sell their young and unwanted wives, for as little as US$200 to US$600. Organizers in rural areas, brokers, and even family members sell girls to make a profit. These poor girls – and sometimes boys – are used, abused and then discarded like rubbish when they are no longer healthy or profitable. Many get sick. Many die. Most are never heard from again.
